Open the secret eye of faith
And drink these deeps of invisible light.
The weak walls of the world fall
And heaven, in floods, comes pouring in:
Sink from your shallows, soul into eternity,
And slake your wonder at that deep-lake spring.
We touch the rays we cannot see,
We feel the light that seems to sing.

- Thomas Merton

If an unwise man chances upon money or a woman's love, he will grow more arrogant, but not more intelligent; He will be deceived about his own worth.

-Hãvamãl

Our life is a pilgrim's progress... sorrowful, yet always rejoicing, rejoicing because it is so far off and the road is so long; hopeful as he looks up to the eternal city far away, resplendent in the evening glow. And he thinks of the old saying - Much strife must be striven, much suffering must be suffered, much prayer must be prayed, and then the end will be peace.

- Van Gogh

Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.

- Jesus

Fidelity to prayer is the beginning of holiness.

Our father's Kingdom is like a man who sowed good seeds in his fields, but at night his enemy came and sowed darnel weed. The field hands asked " Do you want us to pull up the weeds?”

“No." the landowner said,” for you will pull up the wheat with it. Let them grow together until the harvest when they will be easy to sort out.

Reshape yourself through the power of your will; never let yourself be degraded by self- will.
The will is the only friend of self.

- Bhagavad Gita

We can approach our lives as an experiment. In the next moment, in the next hour, we could choose to stop, to slow down, to be still for a few seconds.
We could experiment with interrupting the usual chain reaction, and not to spin off in the usual way.
When we're in a tight spot, we can experiment with not strengthening the aggression habit and see what happens.

-Chögyam Trungpa

For what is prayer but the expansion of yourself into the living ether?
“Our God, who art our winged itself, it is thy willing us that that willeth.
It is thy desire that desireth.
It is thy urge in us that would turn our nights, which are thine, into days, which are thine also.
You cannot ask for aught, for thou knowest our needs before they are born in us.
Thou art our need; and in giving us more of ourselves, thou give us to us all."

-Kahlil Gibran

Calm because I am unknown,
and myself because I'm calm,
I want to fill my days
With wanting nothing from them.
For those whom wealth touches,
gold irritates the skin.
For those on whom fame blows
life fogs over.
On those for whom happiness
is their sun, night will fall.
But those who hope for nothing
are glad for whatever comes

- Fernando Pessoa

No one should live in a world
Where their hearts keep the same steady rhythm.
Live breathless.

- H. Christofferson

Humankind is being lead along an evolving course,
through this migration of intelligences,
and though we seem to be sleeping
there is an inner wakefulness
that directs the dream
-and that will eventually startle us back
to the truth of who we are.

- Rumi

Learning to Stay

Meditation instruction, it sounds so simple:
just sit down, get comfortable, and bring light awareness to your breath.
When your mind wanders, gently come back and stay
present with your breath.

The key point is that, through it all, we train in being open and receptive to whatever arises.

-Pema Chödrön
